I wish I would have known

Updated: Sep 24, 2024

When Danny came to me at twenty-five and told me he was diagnosed with diabetes, I thought “we got this”.  My father is a type 2 diabetic and for as long as I could remember I tried to help.  Occasionally my dad refrains from eating sweets, stops the carbs, and always takes his medication.  His blood sugar is occasionally better.  My dad is going to be 85 and is struggling with all the expected illnesses that you struggle with at 85, and his struggle with diabetes is the last of his concern.

Danny was diagnosed a Type 1 diabetic at 25.  I knew it was different, but I am not sure that I really understood the difference.  I wish now that I did.  I know he didn’t understand the difference as well.  He thought he did something to himself to cause this . . . he didn’t.  Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, and there is no refrain from chocolate or carbohydrates that can prevent it.

Due to COVID, Danny was living with us 2019 and after.  I would hear the struggles as he had watched his diet, was exercising, and giving himself proper insulin doses, but it still it wasn’t right.  He’d wake up with high blood sugar or low blood sugar, and he was totally frustrated with his situation.

October of 2021 was a great month!  Danny closed on a new two-bedroom condominium he bought for himself that contained his prized pool table.  In December of 2021, it proved to be tragic.

I know now that there is so much, I didn’t know.  I didn’t understand what he was struggling with.  I didn’t understand the criticality of everything he was going through.  Our family wants to protect others from what we have encountered.

We won’t rest until we can help others avoid the tragic end that our family is enduring and coming to terms with.  Pumps on Cue is here to help - it's the only thing we can do to bring closure.
